I love Bread - nothing makes my day more than a bunch of bread products munched at intervals all day long. I was thrilled to see this place open and sent the husband over on the weekend to get some items to sample. That being said, I was not personally there, so this review is 100% on quality and not atmosphere or price. I am now scared to ask (having read the other reviews) what the bag he rbought home cost. He wound up with two different ciabbatta-style rolls and a loaf of white. One roll was dusted with flour and was as dry as dry could be. The other was coated with olive oil and sea salt and soaked through the bag - yuck. I cut a few slices from the white and made sandwiches for work the next day - taking the advice on the bag, I did not put the loaf -or even these slices in the fridge and just kept ingredients apart until today's lunch. Not exciting. The dough has little to no flavor and is really flat. I'm not sure I would give this another shot and might just go back to the local bakery at this point.

This location is not food allergy friendly. I tried the scones a couple of times, because the list of ingredients had nothing in them that I was allergic too. However, I had an allergic reaction them. This means that there is unlabeled soy or nut ingredients in their products. When I told the employee, she had a bad attitude and said I should not eat there. It is illegal to not label the products properly due to FDA regulations. If they are not careful, someone could sue them someday. Luckily, my allergic reaction can be tolerated since I am an adult. A child my not be able to handle that amount of allergens in the products without needing to go to the hospital.

So, my wife works across the street from Red Hen and had recommended that I give it a try. The floor plan was odd. There wasn't a space to stand and wait where I wasn't in the way. I ordered the Spiced Roast Beef and moved around to pick it up. As only 1 of 3 people waiting , I guessed my sandwich would be along quickly. Nope. Not a chance. 10 minutes passed when a paper bag was shoved into my hand and I worked my way back through the awkward store to the door. For an $8 sandwich, I had hoped that chips would be waiting in the bag. At least a couple of napkins! I could have used 'em. The sandwich wasn't cut well and was covered in horseradish. Everything was slopped together and shoved into a paper bag. I'm very disappointed, but I'll try again. Maybe it was an off day.

Living only a block away I had been anticipating the opening of Red Hen for months. A Saturday morning seemed like the perfect chance to try Red Hen. The space is quite inviting with high ceilings and a very warm color scheme. However, the food was absolutely non-inspiring. We ordered two sandwiches, the Spice Roast Beef and the Maple Ham. They were both lacking in the meat department. Only two thin slices each and the meat was not of the highest quality. For the price I was expected a bit more refinement of taste and quality of ingredients. I would not recommend the food but I'm sure you can't go wrong with a coffee.

OK, maybe I was a little excited when this place opened. After being back a few times I would say it deserves 3 stars.

I do love going to the Red Hen. I typically go a couple-three times a week because its right by the Library and its usually quiet enough for me to study a bit and have lunch. Wi-fi works 95% of the time and the seating is comfy. The sandwiches are great. My favorite is the Tuna Nicoise. The Veggie sandwich with apples, goat cheese and arugula is interesting and satisfying. Unfortunately, all of the cookies and other sweets are great too. :) The chicken chili is very good but the other soups are not worth $5.00 a bowl, which is pretty dear for a simple bowl of soup. I had some obviously recycled chicken with wild rice combined with creamy mushroom the other day. Was not worth $5.00. My only complaint is the coffee. I know that the majority of people love that strong and slightly burned thing that "Tarbucks" has made so popular, but I wish that Red Hen would change its coffee brand. The flavor is just oddly thick and overwhelming, and one cup is enough to make you very hyper but not in a good way. I will agree with the reviewer that mentioned the odd set-up for ordering food and the less than attentive service. It seems they'd do better to lock the door on the Avenue side so the line forms naturally at the registers. That would decrease the customer frustration during busy periods. Also, the service can be a bit hit or miss but its pretty hard to mess up service at a counter. Overall, Ren Hen is a winner.

Unimpressive and won't revisit. The service was friendly but didn't get the coffee order right. The coffee itself is weak, the mocha was sugary with little coffee flavor. Go across the street to Starbucks or Caribou instead. The croissants were supposed to be heated before serving and tasted like they were microwaved (warm with a soggy crust) instead of reheated on a panini grill (preferred method for crispy flaky crusts). Also the roast beef sandwich was cold. The gal said I would have needed to request it hot when ordering, which I didn't realize because she didn't ask when she took my order. Wish I hadn't added to the tip jar. :P

- overpriced sandwiches, without much variety - had several bad experiences with inexperienced staff messing up the order - said they were going to have hot sandwiches "soon" about 2 years ago

Prompt, friendly service. The chicken chili is to die for. The sandwiches are excellent. Take a chance, and give them a try.

I don't know if this place is overrated or there has been a decline in the quality. I bought a loaf of the soda bread and I can only describe it as hard, dry and tasteless. I expected more for $7.75 a loaf. Sometimes I enjoy their cookies and coffee, but now I'm wondering if bakery is overpriced.

We go to Red Hen regularly. My daughter loves the chicken chili, my son is a fan of the roast beef, and I am fond of the new veggie. Their cupcakes are quite good - my favorite in OP (haven't tried Crumbs, yet) and they make a nice croissant (not the best - that goes to Sugar Fixe) and have very good bread. Also - they know how to make a good cafe latte. When we have company, this is usually our 'go to' lunch place.

Absolutely the best Chicken Chili anywhere in the western burbs!!!

I tried Red Hen for the first time last week with my mom. I had the mozzarella, basil and balsamic sandwich and it was very good. However, there were some disappointments which make it not very likely that I will return. The sandwich was 7.95 which seems a bit pricey to me for a sandwich with no type of side...really would a bad of chips be too much to ask for? We were dining in and when I went up to the counter to ask for a refill of my iced tea, I was told that they didn't give refills. Really? I can't remember the last time I ate in a place that didn't give refills on iced tea. Seems like the folks at Red Hen are being penny wise and pound foolish.

I love places like Red Hen. Where you can get a warm bowl of soup or a hearty sandwich with some yummy pastries. However, I walked out of there feeling like "eh." They didn't have too many vegetarian sandwiches, which was a disappointment. They, of course, had the ubiquitous sandwich with hummus and feta, which is becoming the new "grilled portobello" sandwich of the vegetarian world. Just because you slap some hummus on a sandwich does not mean vegetarians will come running. Which is why I chose the more inventive roasted red pepper, watercress, granny smith apple on a baguette. Now I'm all for mixing flavors and textures, but this combo was not my style. The sandwich was very difficult to eat. The baguette was really hard and my jaw actually hurt while eating it. The apple didn't really add to the sandwich and I just didn't get what they were trying to do with it. It was definitely not worth the price, $8!? Puh leez, i will stick with Panera.

The service is extremely slow at this place. It took 15-20 minutes for them to make the sandwiches. The sandwiches were also very bland and unmemorable. The bread may be fresh but for the prices they are charging for these sandwiches, it is not worth it. Even Panera has tastier sandwiches. For a nice lunch spot, I would much rather go to Marion Street Cheese. Their sandwiches are a higher quality and tastes much better. Their service is extremely slow too but at least it's yummy.

Red Hen is great. I've frequented the Lincoln Park location for years and was thrilled when they opened a location in OP. I was worried to try it as I saw many of the bad reviews but I must say it was all for nought. They have an even better selection of pastries than other locations and they even have quiche. The soup and sandwiches are equally great and the mushroom brie is still my favorite. Don't listen to the naysayers, this place is fantastic.

I completely agree with Melissa B. and the staff is wonderful. My concerns are with the actual sandwich meat in each sandwich. I've given the place several visits as I find that it important to understand the establishment and it's consistency with service, cleanliness and offerings. I am impressed with how the menu reads and the staff knowledge. On one occasion I ordered 8 sandwiches when helping a friend move to Oak Park and was surprised by the amount of meat contained with several of them, particularly the roast beef and smoked turkey. The sandwiches lacked with balance and one could barely taste the meat as there wasn't much. So i decided to give another go anyway and returned. Again, lacking. Finally I tried the mozzerella, basil and balsamic sandwich was delicious. I ordered that with an iced tea and devoured it happily. I returned to the counter and asked for a refill of iced tea when the order taker said "Sure, that will be .77 cents. I was shocked since every restaurant I have ever dined at offers refills for iced tea. So I declined. Red Hen should not charge for something like that. I would imagine since they cheapen the amount of meat in each sandwich their profit margin should be fine.... or maybe not, but getting ahead with a refill of iced tea at .77 cents that probably cost about .05 cents is not good business.
